Ishmelga loge is an incredibly powerful opponent, and maybe the strongest obstacle our heroes have fought. However I think the True ending does this better. Perhaps Rean saying about how he truly found happiness in Class VII or maybe showing his regret that he has to sacrifice himself(showing a difference from the easily self sacrificing Rean from before), could have concluded his charecter arc decently. I actually do think the normal ending could have worked with some rewriting. Now I'm sorry that I took so long to explain my interpretation of Rean in CS4, but I do have something to say about the endings as well. He really feels like a leader with his own resolve. The resolve and growth Rean shows in this game despite his doubts, is why I think CS4 is the culmination of his charecter arc. The game put's a lot of emphasis on bonds and overcoming hard times with loved ones, as seen in scenes like the fragments chapter. While this is for a specific individual, I think it can easily apply to everyone close to Rean as well. In the final bonding events, Rean admits he knows there will be sacrifices because of him, but he's ready to face whatever happens with his chosen person. He does still struggle with self sacrifice, as seen in some bonding events and story moments. It's similar to CS2, but even in that game Rean never fully had the conviction to do what he truly desired, as seen with the events in Crossbell. However he pursues hope even despite these impossible circumstances/opposing wills. Rean is faced with the biggest obstacles he's ever faced, and he's arguably at his lowest point in the beginning. I really don't think CS4 introduces any new ideas for Rean to explore, but rather it builds upon and concludes the themes/ideas the previous games introduced. The fact that he confidently accepted this title, shows a big difference from the Rean who had such little self worth in himself and swordsmanship. There are other things that show Rean's growth as well such as accepting the role of Divine Blade. Instead of submitting to other's wills(Osborne or maybe even Mille Mirage to some extent), he chooses his own path despite how hopeless it seems. Such as confronting the Rivalries in his way, and choosing not the join Mille Mirage. Rean in CS4 makes choices that he really desires. That is hope despite impossible obstacles/choosing your own path(basically what you discussed). I'd argue that CS4 is the culmination of Rean's arc and the central theme of CS(my interpretation). I really struggle to think of something for the forth game besides maybe this game being the payoff for all his friendship speeches? Maybe the culmination of all his bonds?
